SOM Alexis Rivera worked hard to become an ROTC Commanding Officer.

Lynne Grantham, a FUHS substitute teacher,  introduced the SOM Awards Breakfast and told a the audience that the regular Master of Ceremonies Greg Coppock and family had COVID. She quickly reassured everyone the Coppock family is doing well, and she was used to “subbing” in these situations.  The Angel Society, Fallbrook Women’s Club, Village News, MAG-39 Family Readiness, Fallbrook Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) and of course, our Fallbrook Village Rotary attended the event.

The Marine Air Group 39 representatives led the Pledge of Allegiance. They awarded the following students with their medals (pictured left to right): Marco Arias,  Alexis Rivera, Daniel Winton, and Brook Machado.

OASIS High School Principal Michael Gray introduced Brooke Machado, nominated by Teacher Tracy Markham. Teacher Markham told the audience about Brooke’s motivation to learn and outgoing personality. Brooke’s hair changes had Teacher Markham excited to see the next color.  Brooke announced she was honored by the award and plans to become a teacher.

Fallbrook Union High School  (FUHS) Principal Mrs. Lauren Jones presented the FUHS SOMs starting with Marco Arias. Nominating Teacher Marin Pinnell listed Marco’s accomplishments:  getting straight A’s, a strong athlete, and a PSAT National Merit award winner. He participates in the MIT Online Science, Technology, and Engineering Community (MOSTEC) program. She called him a beacon of light. His father talked about his son always wearing a horse costume as a child. He struggled in the costume to get into the family truck. No matter how hard he struggled, he wanted to do it his own way. Allowing Marco to do things his own way helped him achieve. Marco spoke about having an ever-changing future plan. He may be a mechanical engineer in product design and transportation.

Lt. Col. William Wade discussed Alexis Rivera’s leadership abilities during her four-year stint in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) band color guard. She will be representing FUHS in the upcoming Rose Parade. She worked her way up to Commanding Officer of “C” Company by understanding accomplishing the mission and troop welfare. Her mother said she is proud of her daughter who works hard at school from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Alexis plans to attend a four-year university to study psychology.

As his family (left) happily stood onstage, Teacher Marin Pinnell (far right) talked about Daniel Winton joining the varsity team his freshman year, completing community service, and taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes. She compared him to a fine wine with a humorous and friendly notes. His mother talked about how he kindly helps the church’s children on Sundays. Daniel had told Teacher Pinnell that he wanted to be a cool cucumber. During his turn to speak, he announced that he was underage and just couldn’t be fine wine. His plans included a four-year university like UCSD or his parents’ alma mater UC Berkley. He wants to teach high school or middle school. He wants to make school an enjoyable experience that changes students every day … with less work. He certainly made the crowd laugh!

Congratulations to these November Students of the Month!
